Why Precise Grade Is the Difference Between a Drainage System That Works and One That Fails

On a drainage project, grade is everything. Water does exactly one thing: it moves downhill, and it does so with no tolerance for guesswork. A French drain, a swale, a culvert, or a stormwater conveyance that is off by a fraction of an inch over its length will not perform the way it was designed to, and on a drainage system the margin between success and failure is often measured in tenths of a percent of slope. The reason grade matters so much comes down to how water behaves in a pipe or a channel. A drainage line needs enough fall to keep water moving and to keep solids and sediment flushing through rather than settling and clogging, but not so much fall that water races through and undermines the system. For most gravity drainage, that target slope is a narrow band, and holding it consistently along the entire run is what makes the system self-cleaning and reliable. A line that is too flat lets water sit and sediment accumulate until it plugs. A line that sags in the middle, even slightly, creates a low spot where water pools and never fully drains. A line that runs backward, even by a hair over a long distance, sends water exactly where it should not go. None of these problems are visible to the eye during installation. They only reveal themselves the first time it rains hard, which is the most expensive time to discover them.

This is why the process starts before any dirt is moved, with a pre-construction site survey. Before FBLC installs a drainage system, the existing conditions of the site have to be measured and understood: where the high points and low points are, where water currently flows and collects, where the system needs to discharge, and how much fall is actually available between the inlet and the outlet. A drainage plan can call for a certain slope on paper, but the field has to confirm that the elevation exists to achieve it. The pre-construction survey establishes the real-world benchmarks the entire project will be built from, catches conflicts before they become change orders, and gives FBLC the data to install the system correctly the first time rather than discovering a grade problem halfway through.

For that survey work and for establishing grade across a site, FBLC uses GNSS technology. A GNSS receiver uses satellite positioning, corrected in real time through an RTK connection, to capture precise three-dimensional position and elevation anywhere on the site to survey-grade accuracy. On a drainage project, that means FBLC can shoot elevations across the entire site quickly, map the existing terrain, verify available fall from end to end, and lay out the drainage line to the exact grade the design requires. GNSS is what allows FBLC to work efficiently over larger commercial sites and open ground where the whole picture of the terrain matters, capturing the elevation data that drives the whole project without the line-of-sight limitations of older methods.

For setting and checking grade during the actual installation, particularly on the fine work in a trench, FBLC relies on the laser level. A rotating laser establishes a perfectly level reference plane across the work area, and a laser receiver on a grade rod reads that plane at any point, allowing the crew to check the depth and slope of a trench bottom continuously as they dig and set pipe. This is how FBLC holds a consistent fall along a drainage run: rather than eyeballing the grade or checking it only at the ends, the crew can verify it at every point along the line and correct high or low spots before the pipe is set and backfilled. The laser level is the tool that turns a target slope on the plan into a trench bottom that actually holds that slope for its entire length.
